I was given the mail address...
boatanchors-request@gnu.ai.mit.edu
...to be put on the "boatanchors" mailing list. However, I've received
neither a "bounce" nor any mail, and this was more than a week ago. Does
anyone know if this address is correct? A "whois" search on this address
doesn't show it to be active, according to a friend of mine who would
also like to get on the list.

I've never really thought it was difficult to tell if there were expensive equipment
in the vehicle. I alwas manage to see the antenna farm on the roof long before I
can read the plate.....
The only real negative I can see, is that your address is easily determined, (from
the call book) and now the really bad guys can drop by your qth when you're at work
and get the _really_ expensive stuff.....not that the antenna farm in the back yard
wasn't a tipoff to begin with.....

I used another approach to car-protection some years ago when I had a
small convertible sportscar. If I had to park in some high-risk
areas where tops were always being slit by car theives I'd always put
the top down, open the glove compartment and strew maps and debris all
over the seats...passing thieves would think the car had already been
hit and high-tail it away in case the police had been called. Worked
great, but I'm not sure how you could apply this to protecting ham
gear. Maybe someone should market false crowbar-damaged radio
frontends which you could install in front of your rig...hmmm?
Excuse me, I have to run to the patent office...

Well - actually it is called "Akihabara" - but that's a nit.
FYI - near the end of August there will be the giant HARUMI HAM FAIR
(Tokyo's answer to Dayton). Always fun to attend. Be sure to stop
by the Tokyo Int'l Amateur Radio Association booth in the "World Corner".
As for prices ....... an American friend who works at one of the BIG 3
Japanese ham manufacturers told me once that with respect to certain
HF gear in particular, he would personally be able to buy the products
cheaper by going thru a major US mail order outfit than he could by
trying to buy the same rig using his employee discount (he works in Japan).
Apparently, the "published" prices of that particular mail order house
were what he was using for comparison.
That was enough to convince me where to shop ..... although I have
admittedly bought a lot of stuff in Japan.

Just a reminder that when you do your price comparisons you can subtract
the domestic excise tax. At the larger shops you just show your passport
and they will discount your purchase on the spot.

** MROP, GROL and GMDSS exams in Cambridge MA ** Sat. July 9th 1994 **
** Last Chance before additional FCC regulatory fees are imposed **
** GROL fees to be set later **
The MIT Radio Exam Team will conduct exams for the General
Radiotelephone Operators License, the Marine Radio Operators
Permit and the Global Marine Distress and Safety Systems
Maintainer and Operator Licenses. The exams will be held at
10AM on Saturday July 9th in Cambridge MA at 77 Mass Ave
in MIT's Room 1-150.
* This will be the last opportunity to take the MROP and GMDSS licenses
exams before the imposition of an additional $35 regulatory fee.
Slow action by the FCC has delayed the effective date of the new
fee to exams received at the FCC after July 18th. On these licenses
the regulatory fee is charged at $7 per year of license term.
* The FCC has delayed the imposition of a regulatory fee on GROL
applications pending congressional instruction on how to treat lifetime
licenses. !!!
A regular schedule of exams is planned for Cambridge MA on the
second Saturday of odd numbered months. For more information call
Nick at 617 253 3776 (9-5).
There is a $35 examination fee. Bring the ** original ** and a
copy of any commercial license or proof of passing certificates
you want to claim credit for. Also bring 2 forms of picture
ID, a black pen and a pencil.
Copies of the question pools are available from the
Government Printing office or from W5YI at 1 800 669 9594.
This is probably the best study guide available for the
GMDSS exams.
* A comprehensive text book by Fred Maia and Gordon West
covering the MROP and GROL exam material is now available at
Radio Shack.
The General Radio Telephone Operators License is required to
service transmitters in the aviation, maritime and international
radio services. A Maritime Radio Operators Permit is required to
operate radiotelephone stations aboard ships carrying passengers
for hire and certain aviation and coast stations. Large ocean
going ships will be required to carry two Global Maritime Distress
and Safety Systems - operator licenses. A GMDSS Maintainer License
is required to service GMDSS equipment.
At a later date exams will be available for the Commercial Radio
Telegraph operators licenses. Amateur Extra Class operators may
be particularly interested in obtaining a commercial telegraph
license as they will receive credit for the 20 WPM 2nd class code
exam.
The MIT Radio Exam Team operates under the auspices of the
National Radio Examiners COLEM, part of the W5YI group.

Tom LA1BJA/JW1BJA asks:
>>What does QSL-managers in USA prefer,
>>Dollar (Greenstamp), or IRC.
>>Is one IRC to fully cover return postage ??
The airmail postage from the US to your country is $0.50, and one IRC
is sufficient. IRCs are sold by managers for 50-60 cents, or they can
be 'cashed' at the Post Office for (I think) a 50 cents airmail stamp.
If you include the cost of a QSL card and envelope, I suppose you could
justify the cost of mailing to be 55 cents, but it would be a very mean
manager who would not send you a direct airmail card in exchange for one
IRC.
A dollar bill is worth twice the cost of postage, so a greedy manager
would 'prefer' that only because it represents a 'profit'.
If you are requesting a card from a ham who is not a manager, it might
be safer to send the $ because random hams may not want to go to the
trouble of cashing the IRC at the post office.
It is becoming more popular for non-W hams to send W hams envelopes
that already have a 50c US stamp on them. If you do a lot of QSLing
via W stations, you could send $$ to a US ham and ask him or her to
send you the appropriate number of 50c stamps in exchange. Envelopes
with a 50c airmail stamp on will surely bring a reply from a manager
or non-manager. Of course, you have to know when the postal rates
change (since they always seem to increase, rarely decrease...).

What old design? Do you mean the current Liberty plates? It seems to be
rather nasty of DMV to require these plates when all destinctive plates to
date have been optional. Oh well, I guess New York still believes in

Not when I was there last year. The prices of consumer electronics were the
same or higher than US and the ham gear is old, dusty, and high priced.
Somebody's explanation was the prices were still appealing to Europeans and
Australians. Clothes and fake Rolex watches are the only bargains I saw.

Good point - the shohizei or "consumption" (sales) tax is 3%. However,
if you bitch and moan enough, many shops won't bother hassling with you
about it.
In Akihabara (Tokyo) - I suggest the following stores:
T-Zone (they do carry some "export" models)
Ham Geppan
Rocket
Also - be forewarned that Akihabara is famous for being a "Mecca" of sorts
for people seeking virtually any kind of electronic goodies. It is NOT
known as being the place to go for the best prices. There are other
places to go outside of Tokyo proper (if you have the time) where prices
are a bit lower. Some of the larger shops in Akihabara that sell
ham gear also have stores in other parts of the country and in the
the suburbs of metropolitan Tokyo.
Be aware that it is now extremely difficult to buy an "export" model
of VHF gear. The JAs are limited to 144-146MHz on 2M; a few years ago
a "J" mark was added to most HTs to indicate that they could NOT be
reprogrammed for 144-148MHz.
A couple of other comments:
1) HF rigs come in several power "flavors" to match license classes in Japan.
If you buy an HF rig there, make sure you get the power rating you want
(10, 25, 50, 100 watts, etc.).
Make sure that the HF rig has the ability to transmit on all bands
available in your home country (e.g. JAs get only 7000-7100 KHz).
2) No 220MHz rigs in Japan (those freqs are used for broadcast television).
3) 70cm "domestic" rigs operate only 430-440MHz (not 440-450 like in USA).
ALL 70 cm repeaters in Japan are "required" to use the mandatory
88Hz sub-audible access tone.
4) As mentioned above, 2M JA equipment is good only for 144-146MHz.
Since there are no repeaters authorized on 2M in Japan, be careful
that any rig you buy is useable in your home country.
Cheers de Sandy
